Meet our founder
By age 12, Madeleine Chin had already written two novels, Protector Stones and Behind the Spotlight. After hearing from readers and getting questions about writing tips, she discovered just how much her books inspired other kids to write too.
In 7th grade, she wanted to make an immediate and greater impact. So she started Mindful Reading to help kids fall in love with reading and writing, just like she did. Her own writing journey began with a deep love for reading at a very young age, when she found joy in getting lost in imaginative stories. Now, she's using her voice to help other kids discover theirs.

In just a few months since the launch, she has met so many incredible students at the speaking events held at various schools. She loves answering their questions on reading, writing, and fun facts about herself. She can't wait to expand her reach further through more programs and events. She was honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award (Bronze) in recognition of her dedication to promoting youth literacy and community service.

Mindful Reading’s mission is to increase literacy in children and promote awareness of its benefits in supporting mental health and emotional well-being.

The Who
Mindful Reading is a youth-led nonprofit organization that believes the many benefits of reading should be communicated to more communities as they can help children manage their emotions better. We envision a world in which all children have abundant access to books, develop healthy mental and emotional well-being, and build skills to succeed in school and life. We provide opportunities to promote children’s literacy development, raise awareness of positive impact of reading, and connect with local organizations that can expand their support network. We are unwavering in our commitment to engage in meaningful partnerships, work closely with educators and industry experts, to achieve our mutual goals.
The Why
Researchers have been investigating the effects of reading and reporting evidence of promising mental health benefits. It improves memory and concentration, fostering deeper thinking and understanding. Additionally, it stimulates the imagination, transporting readers into different worlds and experiences. Regardless of reading alone or with others, people are finding connections in the diverse perspectives that can cultivate empathy and emotional intelligence. Overall, reading can significantly enhance mental well-being by providing relaxation, cognitive engagement, emotional growth, and a sense of connection. Mindful Reading understands the importance of our mission and is dedicated to remain focused on our vision.
